The Avenue

Running diagonally across the slope of the old “top field” is the Avenue, a double staggered row of 20 sweetgums.  This forms one of the most consciously designed elements of this area of La Corolla.  The trees are flanked by banks of species and shrub roses.

The Avenue leads in a straight line from the American Woodland to the Hilltop, a direct but steep route (a 1-in-3 slope).  Above and below the Avenue are smaller sections of mixed shrubs and sun-loving flowering trees, divided by grass access paths.

Greedier, needier plants are grouped towards the bottom of the slope and leaner, feistier specimens are to be found higher up where the ground is poorer, stonier and drier.
